The Suva Volleyball Association proudly resumed its weekly club competitions yesterday at the LICI Courts in Laucala Bay, Suva. Following the conclusion of a knockout tournament last week, the top four teams have been selected to represent Suva at the upcoming interclub tournament.
Games commissioner Jone Baleilomaloma highlighted the resurgence of interest in volleyball, particularly among the youth. “Suva volleyball has made remarkable strides in development,” he said. “Many young talents are showing enthusiasm and have begun integrating into our senior teams.” Despite the absence of a formal development division in the weekly tournaments, Baleilomaloma expressed confidence that young players are benefiting significantly from exposure to the primer division, allowing them to refine their skills against experienced opponents.
The current week’s competition features a total of 13 men’s teams and 11 women’s teams. An open division was established in this phase to give new and developing teams the opportunity to compete against established senior teams, which will provide them with valuable match experience necessary to advance to higher levels.
The round-robin matches are scheduled to continue for the next four weeks before culminating in the interclub tournament. This kind of structure not only stimulates competition but also fosters camaraderie and talent development among participants, showcasing a promising future for volleyball in the region. The enthusiasm surrounding these events suggests that the ongoing commitment to player development and community engagement will further enhance the sport’s popularity and success in Fiji.
