The Suva Touch Rugby Association is set to launch an exciting new initiative as it prepares for its inaugural Business House Festival, scheduled for June 28 at HFC Bank Stadium, with subsequent matches taking place on July 5 at Albert Park. This groundbreaking event will gather government ministries, major banks, utility companies, and corporate offices on the rugby field, promoting camaraderie through a mixed touch rugby tournament.
Association president Danielle Keli expressed enthusiasm about this event, noting that it is a first for the Suva Touch organization. “We’re looking to establish this as an annual event,” she stated, indicating that the turnout has already exceeded expectations with 24 teams registered to participate. The tournament is designed to be inclusive, featuring mixed-gender teams to foster participation among both male and female players.
The tournament will consist of several competing pools, with notable participants such as Centrecom Suva, Ministry of Housing, and Fiji Police Force among others. Keli explained that although such competitions typically occur during weekdays, weekend scheduling was necessary this year due to venue availability, which speaks to the level of interest in the event.
Importantly, proceeds from the Business House Festival will support Suva teams preparing for the Pacific Cup in New Zealand later this year. Plans include sending teams across various categories, such as men’s open, women’s open, and masters teams, contributing further to the regional rugby scene.
This initiative aligns with the broader push within Fiji’s sports community to engage diverse demographics and promote an active lifestyle. By fostering teamwork across various sectors, the festival not only aims to enhance the sport of touch rugby but also strives to strengthen community bonds through shared experiences and mutual support.
The excitement surrounding the Business House Festival is indicative of a hopeful trend towards increased collaboration between sporting and corporate sectors, providing opportunities for networking and community engagement through the love of the game.
