Suva’s business owners are set to experience increased security measures with the upcoming installation of 40 advanced CCTV cameras throughout the central business district. This initiative stems from rising concerns regarding a recent surge in crime and was confirmed by Tevita Boseiwaqa, chairman of the Suva City Council (SCC). A tender for the project was publicly advertised on January 4, 2025.

The new CCTV system will feature state-of-the-art technology similar to that utilized in various Australian cities, specifically aimed at detecting known offenders under the watch of the Fiji Police Force. The installation will cover crucial areas from Nabukalou Bridge to Walu Bay Bridge, ensuring extensive monitoring of key commercial districts.

Boseiwaqa emphasized that these advanced cameras are designed to function effectively even in low-light conditions, allowing them to track movements and register individuals of interest at all hours. To facilitate continuous monitoring, a dedicated surveillance station will be established, potentially located at either the market station or the SCC office, enabling police to swiftly respond to any illegal activities.
