Teams from Suva triumphed at the Fiji Men’s & Mixed Netball Association National Championships held last weekend in Lautoka. Suva secured victories across all major categories, including the under-19 men’s, U23 men’s, open grade men’s, and open mixed grade tournaments.

The only category not claimed by Suva was the mixed masters, which saw Nadi take home the title. The competition embraced the theme of the PlaySafe campaign, emphasizing the importance of HIV awareness and offering free testing at the event, using the hashtag #PlaySafe FMMNA National.

FMMNA president Myron Williams noted the participation of around 30 teams, comprising approximately 500 players and officials. This event reflected the rising popularity of men’s and mixed netball in Fiji, attracting participants from various regions, including Tailevu, Nasinu, Suva, Lautoka, Nadi, and Savusavu.

Williams highlighted that this year’s competition included five engaging categories: under-19 men’s, U23, open grade men’s, open mixed grade, and mixed masters 35-plus.

The event not only showcased the sporting talent in Fiji but also promoted vital health awareness, demonstrating the positive impact of sports on community health initiatives.

In summary, Suva’s dominance in the championships signals a strong presence in netball, while the event’s support for health awareness reflects a progressive attitude towards community wellbeing. This blend of sports and health advocacy presents a hopeful outlook for the future of netball in Fiji.
