Teams from Suva showcased their prowess at the recent Fiji Men’s & Mixed Netball Association National Championships held in Lautoka over the weekend. Suva dominated the tournament, clinching victories in the under-19 men’s, U23 men’s, open men’s grade, and open mixed grade categories. The only exception was the mixed masters category, which was won by the Nadi team.

The event embraced the theme of the PlaySafe campaign, emphasizing the importance of HIV awareness and offering free testing at the venue, reinforced by the campaign’s hashtag, #PlaySafe FMMNA National. Myron Williams, president of FMMNA, noted that around 30 teams participated, involving roughly 500 players and officials.

This championship highlighted the rising popularity of men’s and mixed netball across Fiji, attracting competitors from various regions including Tailevu, Nasinu, Suva, Lautoka, Nadi, and Savusavu. Williams remarked on the thrilling nature of the competition, which included five distinct grades: under-19 men’s, U23, open men’s, open mixed grade, and mixed masters 35-plus.

In summary, the championships not only celebrated athletic achievements but also contributed to a vital public health initiative, potentially encouraging greater community engagement in both sports and health awareness.

This event marks a positive trend in Fiji’s sports culture, fostering teamwork and competitive spirit while addressing important health issues, showcasing how sports can play a significant role in promoting social awareness.
