Teams from Suva achieved remarkable success at the recent Fiji Men’s & Mixed Netball Association National Championships in Lautoka over the weekend. Suva teams claimed victory in all categories, including the under-19 men’s, U23 men’s, open grade men’s, and open mixed grade events. The only exception was the mixed masters category, which was won by Nadi.
This year, the championship embraced the PlaySafe campaign, aiming to raise awareness about HIV and provide free testing, highlighted by the hashtag #PlaySafe FMMNA National. FMMNA president Myron Williams noted that about 30 teams, totaling around 500 players and officials, participated in the event.
The championships showcased the growing interest in men’s and mixed netball in Fiji, drawing talent from regions including Tailevu, Nasinu, Suva, Lautoka, Nadi, and Savusavu. Williams expressed excitement about the five competitive grades represented this year: under-19 men’s, U23, open grade men’s, open mixed grade, and mixed masters 35-plus.
This successful event not only spotlighted the athletic prowess in netball but also reinforced the importance of community health awareness through engaging sports initiatives.
The overall triumph of Suva teams is a testament to their dedication and skill, signaling a strong future for netball in Fiji and a growing community focus on health and wellness.
