Taxi drivers in Suva recently played a crucial role in the apprehension of a man who attempted to steal a vehicle that had two young children inside. The incident occurred late last night after a 28-year-old mother was involved in a minor accident on Victoria Parade. While she was waiting for the police, she left the vehicle’s keys in the ignition, which allowed the suspect to jump in and drive away with the woman’s daughters seated in the back.
Prompt reporting to the police initiated a quick response, with law enforcement notifying local taxi operators about the stolen vehicle. Utilizing their Radio Transmitters (RT), taxi drivers promptly shared the information throughout their network. This swift communication led to the vehicle being located on Rewa Street, just after the suspect stopped to let the two girls out of the car.
One of the taxi operators promptly intercepted the vehicle, which created a critical window for police to arrive and arrest the man. The suspect, however, attempted to resist arrest and assaulted four officers during the process but was ultimately taken into custody. Investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu commended the taxi drivers for their quick and effective actions, noting, “These taxi operators assisted the police in apprehending the culprit, demonstrating the power of working together to prevent crime.” In a gesture of gratitude, local police officials plan to visit the taxi operators today to thank them for their critical support in resolving the situation.
This incident highlights the importance of community collaboration in ensuring public safety, showcasing how vigilant citizens can significantly contribute to law enforcement efforts. The proactive actions of the taxi operators not only assisted in safeguarding the children but also reinforced the community’s commitment to maintaining a safe environment.
