The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has commenced drainage operations within Suva City as part of a larger initiative aimed at essential road repairs and enhancements. These efforts focus on improving conditions, especially around the Suva bus terminal area, with further maintenance work expected to be completed next month, contingent on weather conditions.

Tevita Boseiwaqa, the Chairman of the Suva City Council, has addressed public inquiries, confirming that the project is already underway. “We’ve already initiated works on the Bridge-to-Bridge Project in partnership with the Fiji Roads Authority,” Mr. Boseiwaqa stated, noting that drainage operations, which are crucial for the longevity of road repairs, have begun.

He emphasized that effective drainage is vital for establishing a lasting foundation for road improvements, as it helps prevent water-related issues like potholes. Mr. Boseiwaqa provided a timeline, mentioning that upgrades should be completed by the end of this month, barring any weather disruptions. The upgrades will include roads leading into the main and western bus stations, as well as the MPI car park.

To facilitate the upgrades and reduce disruption for daily commuters, a temporary road closure is scheduled from 8 PM to 5 AM each day. Addressing additional drainage concerns, Mr. Boseiwaqa assured that the Suva City Council would collaborate with the FRA and the Ministry of Waterways to tackle flooding issues, particularly the persistent drainage problems behind the MHCC exit on Cumming Street.

He clarified the distribution of responsibilities regarding drainage management: while the SCC handles minor drainage issues, the FRA oversees the major road areas. “We will be coordinating with FRA and the Ministry of Waterways to address these drainage challenges,” he said.

Looking to the future, Mr. Boseiwaqa highlighted a shift in focus for the council towards enhancing existing infrastructure, prioritizing vital upgrades and beautification efforts rather than embarking on new development projects.

This initiative reflects a proactive approach to infrastructure management, illustrating the authorities’ commitment to improving the urban environment for Suva’s residents and commuters. Such upgrades not only enhance road safety but also contribute to the overall aesthetic and functionality of the city.

As the project progresses, the collaboration between various governmental bodies is crucial, showcasing a well-coordinated effort to address long-standing infrastructure challenges and enrich the community’s quality of life.
