Suva’s teams emerged victorious at the Fiji Men’s & Mixed Netball Association National Championships held in Lautoka over the weekend. Teams from Suva excelled across all categories, including the under-19 men’s, U23 men’s, open grade men’s, and open mixed grade divisions. The only category not clinched by Suva was the mixed masters, which saw Nadi taking home the title.
This year’s event was underpinned by the PlaySafe campaign, aimed at raising HIV awareness and offering free testing, indicated by the hashtag #PlaySafe FMMNA National. The championships involved approximately 30 participating teams and drew around 500 players and officials, highlighting the growing interest in men’s and mixed netball across Fiji. Participants came from various areas including Tailevu, Nasinu, Suva, Lautoka, Nadi, and Savusavu.
FMMNA president Myron Williams noted the excitement of this year’s competition, which included five competitive grades: under-19 men’s, U23, open grade men’s, open mixed grade, and mixed masters 35-plus.
This event not only showcased skill and talent but also reinforced community health initiatives, making it a celebration of sports and public awareness in Fiji.
In a hopeful and positive light, the dominance of Suva’s teams can inspire further development and investment in netball across the country, paving the way for more competitive spirit and community engagement in health and sports.
