The Suva Rugby Union (SRU) has received a significant boost for its 2025 Skipper Cup campaign, as the Suva City Council has approved the use of part of Karsanji Bhindi Park – Bhindi Industrial for weekly competitions. SRU chairman Viliame Draunibaka expressed that while formal arrangements are still being finalized, this development is a landmark moment for rugby within Suva’s communities and urban areas.
Draunibaka praised the Suva City Council for their acknowledgment of the SRU’s ongoing need for sports infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of providing local communities and sports teams with enhanced facilities to ensure optimal playing conditions. He noted that for over a century, the SRU has served as a vital part of the local community, providing numerous young men and women with the opportunity to participate in club and community rugby.
“This engagement promotes healthy activities, steering youths away from crime and drugs,” said Draunibaka. He highlighted that the SRU has played a crucial role in identifying and nurturing talented individuals, some of whom have gone on to join esteemed teams like the Fijian Drua and Flying Fijians. Additionally, the union has opened pathways for players to secure overseas contracts and pursue careers in various fields, including the military, police, and correctional services.
Draunibaka emphasized that this new development will significantly improve the SRU’s ability to cultivate talent and strengthen the community spirit through rugby.
This initiative reflects a positive commitment to fostering sports and community engagement, which can lead to healthier lifestyles and greater opportunities for the youth in Suva. The investment in sports infrastructure not only benefits the players but also enhances community cohesion and pride.
