In light of warnings issued to traders concerning back-to-school shopping, the Suva Retailers Association has issued a call to local businesses to refrain from price gouging.
Jitesh Patel, the association’s president, indicated in an interview with FBC News that the majority of retailers in Suva are already practicing fair pricing, with numerous businesses selling products at prices below the official price controls set by the Fiji Competition & Consumer Commission.
“We have seen that businesses in the city are very mindful of the pricing, and the competition is very high, so I don’t think anybody would be price gouging because customers are smart, looking around town and checking prices before they buy,” Patel stated.
He emphasized that businesses that engage in unethical pricing practices will ultimately face negative consequences. “I would clearly tell the businesses it’s wrong to do that because you would be the loser in the end. As I’ve said, the market is very competitive; people are looking around town for the best prices and are more inclined to make purchases from those they perceive as offering the best value,” he said.
Patel also advised consumers to avoid procrastinating on their shopping, noting that while many stores have extended hours, they will become increasingly busy as the back-to-school deadline approaches. This proactive approach to shopping can help families avoid the stress of last-minute purchases and ensure they find the best deals. By fostering a fair shopping environment and encouraging smart consumer behavior, the Suva Retailers Association hopes to create a positive marketplace for both businesses and shoppers as the school season unfolds.
