Retailers in Suva are expressing optimism for a surge in sales as the back-to-school season picks up pace, despite some challenging weather conditions earlier this week. Jitesh Patel, President of the Suva Retailers Association, noted that the overall business climate is encouraging, with many retailers already witnessing consistent demand for essential school items including books, bags, uniforms, and stationery supplies.
Although recent wet weather has temporarily slowed foot traffic, Patel is confident that this trend will shift as the city braces for an influx of shoppers. He anticipates that residents from outer islands and rural areas will travel to Suva to complete their back-to-school purchases.
A key factor driving this anticipated increase in market activity is the expected rollout of the Government’s Back-to-School Assistance, which is slated to begin by the weekend. Patel emphasized that this initiative not only stands to benefit retailers in Suva but will also invigorate businesses nationwide.
“The back-to-school assistance consistently has a strong influence on sales, and we are hopeful it will provide a much-needed boost for businesses,” Patel stated.
Retailers are preparing for a busy weekend. Ranjeeta Devi from CK’s Eazybuy mentioned that customers have begun their shopping ahead of the festive season. “We expect our shop to be bustling this weekend,” she shared, noting that many shoppers have arrived early to purchase uniforms and various items.
Salendra Nand of Sky Glory is advising parents to be savvy shoppers by comparing prices. He observed that customers have started shopping earlier than in previous years and predicted a significant increase in sales during this back-to-school period. “The quality of our books is available at very affordable prices. We encourage customers to browse and take their time,” he advised.
Patel reiterated the importance of making informed purchasing decisions during this busy shopping period. He cautioned consumers against solely focusing on low prices, stating, “Sometimes the cheapest option is not the best. Customers should take their time to compare products to ensure they are getting good quality and value for their money.”
With hopes for improved weather and increased travel to the capital, the retailer community remains optimistic that these factors, along with government support, will create a vibrant economic environment in the coming days.
