Hundreds of residents in the Suva region are currently experiencing water supply interruptions due to a mechanical failure at the Savura raw water pump station. The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) reported that a malfunction in one of the three pumps has significantly impacted the inflow of raw water to the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant, leading to a decrease in production levels and reservoir supplies.
Areas that are particularly affected include:
– **Tamavua Reservoir**: Namadi Heights, Princes Road, Rewa Street, and elevated areas in Lami.
– **Nagatugatu Reservoir**: Wrong Turn, Sakoca, and Tacirua Heights.
– **Tacirua Reservoir**: Neighborhoods such as Tamavua Koro and Upper Ragg Avenue.
– **Dokanaiusuva Reservoir**: All customers from this reservoir are experiencing a total lack of water supply.
In response to the situation, WAF has mobilized technical teams to quickly address the malfunction, with repairs expected to be completed by 5 PM today. Following the repair efforts, WAF plans to focus on ramping up production and replenishing reservoir levels to restore normal services.
To help those affected, WAF is offering water carting services to ensure essential water needs are met during this disruption. This current situation is reminiscent of past challenges, including those faced during heavy rainfall from Tropical Cyclone Rae, which previously led to increased turbidity in the water supply. During that time, WAF was forced to reduce raw water inflow to maintain water quality, presenting its own set of challenges.
Residents are encouraged to prepare by storing sufficient water for essential use and reducing non-essential consumption. This experience highlights the importance of community cooperation in overcoming environmental challenges and safeguarding public health. WAF remains committed to resolving these disruptions and ensuring reliable water service for all residents.
