Suva Port Sees Surge in Container Volume Amid Global Trade Challenges

Suva Port experienced an increase in container volume during August, according to data from Fiji Ports Terminal Limited. The port handled 9,658 containers in August, up from 8,815 in July, marking a difference of 843 containers, as noted by Chief Executive Officer Hasthika Dela.

In August, Suva Port welcomed 23 container vessels. Meanwhile, Lautoka Port saw a slight decline in container volume, recording 6,937 containers in July and a decrease of 346 containers in August.

Mr. Dela highlighted that global ports are facing challenges due to geopolitical tensions affecting international trade, labor shortages, rising costs, and environmental regulations.

In August, Suva port’s incoming vessels included two car carriers, one clinker, four oil tankers, a passenger cruise ship, and a Navy vessel. Lautoka Port received 18 container vessels and two wheat bulk carriers during the same month.
