Suva Port Sees Container Volume Surge Amid Global Trade Challenges

There was a notable increase in container volume at Suva Port during August. Records from Fiji Ports Terminal Limited indicated that Suva Port handled 8,815 containers in July, which rose to 9,658 in August, marking an increase of 843 containers between the two months.

Fiji Ports Terminal Limited’s CEO, Hasthika Dela, reported that 23 container vessels docked at Suva in August. In contrast, Lautoka Port experienced a slight decline in container volume, recording 6,937 in July and a reduction of 346 containers in August.

Mr. Dela also highlighted the challenges faced by global ports, including geopolitical tensions affecting trade, labor shortages, rising costs, imbalances between supply and demand, as well as environmental and regulatory changes.

In August, the types of vessels arriving at Suva Port included two car carriers, one clinker, four oil tankers, one passenger cruise ship, and one Navy vessel. Lautoka Port had 18 container vessels and two wheat bulk carriers arriving during the same month.
