The Suva One athletics team is gearing up to defend its title in the Under 14 boys’ division at the Tuckers Ice Cream Primary Schools athletics championship this weekend. In a recent interview, head coach Bill Momo expressed confidence in the team’s preparations, stating that they have successfully transitioned from the general preparation phase to the pre-competition phase.
Momo emphasized the critical role played by stakeholders, including school heads, teachers, and parents, in supporting the athletes’ training regimen. He acknowledged the need to refine their performance based on last year’s results and aims to also secure a victory in the girls’ division.
Despite facing challenges due to inclement weather, Momo noted that the team has adapted well by changing training venues as needed. The intensity of training has paid off, with the athletes setting specific targets in times and distances, which were evaluated during last Saturday’s Fiji athletics meet organized by Athletics Fiji.
Momo highlighted the growing professionalism in athletics within Fiji, crediting the inclusion of specialist coaches to enhance skills in disciplines like long jump, high jump, and throws. The focus on improving coaching capabilities has been bolstered by Athletics Fiji’s efforts to provide training for teachers in rural and outer island communities.
He acknowledged that other districts will pose significant competition, as they too are eager to win. However, Momo expressed gratitude for the support from guardians, parents, and school heads, which has been vital to the team’s success.
An exciting aspect of this competition is that some students will be participating in running and throwing events for the first time, marking a significant milestone for them, regardless of the outcome. Momo also extended his best wishes to all participating districts, recognizing the added challenge posed by the Wallis and Futuna athletics team, which is expected to elevate the competition.
The championship will take place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on November 28 and 29.
