The Suva One athletics team is gearing up to defend their title in the Under 14 boys’ division at the upcoming Tuckers Ice Cream Primary Schools athletics championship, taking place this weekend. Head coach Bill Momo expressed confidence in the team’s preparation during an interview.

Momo highlighted that their training has been well-structured, progressing through general preparation to the current pre-competition phase. He extended gratitude to the stakeholders involved, including school heads, teachers, and parents, who have supported the team’s efforts. They plan to address weaknesses identified in last year’s performance while also aiming to excel in the girls’ division.

Despite facing challenges due to unfavorable weather, which required venue changes during training, Momo noted that the team has adapted well. The training regimen was initially intense, but measurable targets in performance were set, which the athletes successfully gauged during the recent Fiji athletics meet hosted by Athletics Fiji.

Momo pointed out the growth of athletics in Fiji, indicating a rising professionalism in the sport. The inclusion of specialized coaches in various disciplines has enhanced athletes’ training experiences. Additionally, efforts have been made to improve the coaches’ skills, particularly in rural areas and outer islands, enabling them to gain international coaching accreditation.

With other districts also competing for victory, Momo acknowledged the fierce competition but expressed optimism about the support from parents and sponsors. He noted that some participants will experience competitive athletics for the first time, which he views as a win for all involved.

The upcoming event will also see participation from the Wallis and Futuna athletics team, adding to the competitive spirit of the championships. This event is scheduled to be held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva from November 28 to 29, promising an exciting showdown for the young athletes.

Overall, this championship not only showcases individual and team talent but also marks a significant milestone in the development of athletics in Fiji, fostering growth, collaboration, and community support around sports. It serves as a wonderful platform for young athletes to shine and gain invaluable experience, paving the way for future success in the sport.
