The Suva One athletics team is gearing up to defend its title in the Under 14 boys’ division at this weekend’s Tuckers Ice Cream Primary Schools athletics championship. Head coach Bill Momo shared insights into their preparations during an interview with SUNsports.

Momo emphasized the thoroughness of their training regimen, stating, “Our preparation has been on par with what we’re trying to do from general phase of preparation to competition.” As they enter the pre-competition phase, he expressed gratitude for the support received from stakeholders, including the 14 heads of schools, teachers, and parents.

In addition to aiming for the boys’ title, Momo expressed hopes of securing the girls’ division as well. The team faced challenges due to adverse weather conditions but adapted by changing training locations to ensure continuity. He noted that the athletes have adjusted well, undergoing intense training with clear targets for performance.

The recent Fiji athletics meet, organized by Athletics Fiji, allowed the team to assess their preparation, highlighting the significant growth of athletics in Fiji. Momo pointed out that the sport is becoming increasingly professional through the involvement of specialist coaches such as Antonio Raboiliku for long jump and Rajen Prasad for high jump.

Momo acknowledged the stiff competition expected from other districts, all of whom are vying for gold medals. He emphasized the importance of strong support from guardians, parents, and school heads in empowering the athletes.

He also recognized the participation of students who will be competing for the first time, noting that their involvement symbolizes a win for the broader community. Furthermore, Momo welcomed the Wallis and Futuna athletics team, which will add another layer of competitiveness to the championship.

The championship will take place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva from November 28 to 29, promising an exciting showcase of young athletic talent.

This championship not only serves as a platform for young athletes to compete but also fosters camaraderie among various schools and regions. The dedication of schools, coaches, and families indicates a positive future for athletics in Fiji.

Overall, this event stands as a testament to the growth and commitment to youth sports, which plays a crucial role in developing discipline and teamwork among the younger generation.
