The Suva One athletics team is focused on defending its title in the Under 14 boys’ division at the upcoming Tuckers Ice Cream Primary Schools athletics championship this weekend. In an interview with SUNsports, head coach Bill Momo expressed confidence in his team’s preparedness, stating that they have transitioned from general training to a focused pre-competition phase. He emphasized the importance of support from stakeholders, which includes 14 heads of schools, teachers, and parents.
Momo noted that the team is working to address weaknesses identified in last year’s performance and aims to secure victories in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions. He acknowledged that adverse weather conditions have posed challenges, but the team has adapted their training locations as necessary, allowing for continued preparation.
The head coach highlighted the competitive nature of the event, expecting strong performances from other districts as everyone vies for accolades, especially the coveted gold medal. Momo is optimistic about the growth of athletics in Fiji, which is becoming increasingly professional. This is complemented by the inclusion of specialist coaches to enhance training and performance.
Additionally, Momo recognized the efforts of Athletics Fiji in providing coaching opportunities for teachers from rural areas and outer islands, allowing for greater access to international athletics training.
The competition is set to take place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva from November 28 to 29, with Momo extending well wishes to all participating districts. He also commented on the significance of participation, mentioning that several students will be competing in athletics for the first time, highlighting the event’s potential to inspire the next generation.
