The Suva One athletics team is focused on retaining their title in the Under 14 boys’ division during the Tuckers Ice Cream Primary Schools athletics championships scheduled for this weekend. In a recent interview, head coach Bill Momo expressed confidence in the team’s preparations, highlighting support from stakeholders, including school heads, teachers, and parents.
Momo emphasized their strategy to build upon last year’s performance by addressing previous shortcomings. He also noted their ambition to excel in the girls’ division. Despite facing challenges from adverse weather, the team has shown resilience by adapting their training venues when necessary.
With a rigorous training regimen in place, Momo reported satisfaction with the athletes’ progress shown during last Saturday’s Fiji athletics meet, which offered a valuable benchmark for assessing their development.
The growth of athletics in Fiji has been significant, with the incorporation of specialized coaches contributing to the team’s preparation. This initiative has not only enhanced coaching quality but also provided learning opportunities for teachers involved in athletics training in rural areas and outer islands.
Anticipating strong competition from other districts, Momo acknowledged that many teams are equally determined to win medals. He expressed gratitude for the support from parents and sponsors, recognizing the significance of participation for students, especially those competing in athletics for the first time.
He also mentioned the inclusion of the Wallis and Futuna athletics team, which is expected to elevate the competitive standard of the event. The championship will take place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on November 28 and 29, promising an exciting showcase of talent and sportsmanship.
This competition not only presents a chance to defend the title but also highlights the growing enthusiasm for athletics across the region, nurturing young talents and fostering community engagement in sports.
