The Suva One athletics team is determined to defend their title in the Under 14 boys’ division at the upcoming Tuckers Ice Cream Primary Schools athletics championship, scheduled for this weekend. Head coach Bill Momo shared insights about the team’s preparations during an interview with SUNsports.
Momo expressed confidence in their training, noting that they are currently in the pre-competition phase and acknowledging the support from various stakeholders, including school heads, teachers, and parents. He emphasized the importance of refining their performance based on last year’s experience.
In addition to the boys’ division, Momo aims to secure success in the girls’ division as well. Despite setbacks due to inclement weather, he highlighted the team’s adaptability, particularly in adjusting training venues during rainy conditions. Momo described the intensity of their preparation, mentioning that they have set specific performance targets and were pleased with their results during the recent Fiji athletics meet organized by Athletics Fiji (AF).
Momo noted the increasing professionalism of athletics in Fiji, thanks in part to the involvement of specialist coaches. These coaches are helping to elevate the skills of both the athletes and the teachers, with accessible coaching accreditation programs being offered to rural areas and outer islands.
Recognizing the competitive spirit of other districts, Momo acknowledged that all participants are vying for victory. He underscored the vital role of support from families and sponsors in their journey. Interestingly, some students will be competing in athletics for the first time, which Momo sees as a significant achievement for their development.
The competition promises to be exciting, with the Wallis and Futuna athletics team joining in to increase the competitive field. Momo extended his gratitude to the teachers from Wallis and Futuna for bringing their team, further enriching the event.
The championships will take place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on November 28 and 29, which offers a hopeful outlook for young athletes looking to showcase their talents and for the continued growth of athletics in the region.
This event not only highlights the accomplishments and aspirations of the Suva One team but also reflects the broader positive trajectory of sporting events in Fiji, where young athletes can aspire, learn, and grow through competition.
