The Suva One athletics team is gearing up to defend its title in the Under 14 boys’ division at the upcoming Tuckers Ice Cream Primary Schools athletics championship this weekend. Head coach Bill Momo shared insights about their preparations during an interview yesterday.
Momo expressed confidence in their training regimen, stating, “Our preparation has been on par with what we’re trying to do from the general phase of preparation to competition.” They are currently in the pre-competition phase and grateful for the support from various stakeholders, including school heads, teachers, and parents.
Addressing challenges faced during training, Momo highlighted the adverse weather conditions but noted that the team has adapted well. “We would change the training venue in case of rainfall,” he explained. The initial training sessions were intense, setting measurable targets for performance, which were positively evaluated during a recent athletics meet organized by Athletics Fiji.
Momo emphasized the growing professionalism in athletics in Fiji, which has been enhanced by the inclusion of specialized coaches. He acknowledged the significant efforts to upgrade coaching standards, particularly in rural areas and outer islands, through international coaching accreditation programs.
As the competition approaches, Momo anticipates strong competition from other districts, with all teams aiming for victory and the coveted gold medals. He expressed appreciation for the support of guardians and parents, adding that new participants will bring fresh energy to the event.
He also noted the expected competitive spirit from the Wallis and Futuna athletics team, which will add another layer of toughness to the championship. “It’s a growth in athletics itself,” Momo remarked.
The competition is set to take place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva from November 28 to 29. The excitement surrounding this event not only showcases the talent of young athletes but also promotes sportsmanship and community involvement.
This event is a great opportunity to inspire young athletes and foster a love for sports at an early age, which can lead to personal development and future successes in athletics. Best wishes to all participating districts!
