The Suva One athletics team is gearing up to defend its title in the Under 14 boys’ division at the upcoming Tuckers Ice Cream Primary Schools athletics championship, set to take place this weekend. Head coach Bill Momo shared insights into the team’s preparations during an interview with SUNsports.
Momo expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, stating that their preparations have been thorough, transitioning from a general phase to a focused pre-competition phase. He acknowledged the vital support from various stakeholders, including the 14 school heads, teachers, and parents, which has played a crucial role in their preparations.
The coach noted the team’s focus on addressing weaknesses identified in their previous year’s performance and is also looking to secure victories in the girls’ division. He mentioned challenges posed by unfavorable weather conditions but emphasized the team’s adaptability, citing adjustments made to their training venues when required.
Intensity in training remains high, with the athletes setting performance targets for times and distances. Positive indicators of their progress were seen during the recent Fiji athletics meet organized by Athletics Fiji.
Momo highlighted the evolving landscape of athletics in Fiji, describing it as becoming increasingly professional. He credited the inclusion of specialist coaches who offer expertise in various disciplines, contributing to the development of local coaches through accreditation programs facilitated by Athletics Fiji.
While the Suva One team is optimistic about their prospects, Momo acknowledged that other districts are also aiming for victory, emphasizing the competitive nature of the championship and the pursuit of gold medals. He recognized the strong support from parents, guardians, and school heads, which fuels the team’s ambition.
Additionally, Momo welcomed the participation of the Wallis and Futuna athletics team, anticipating heightened competition. The championship will unfold at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva from November 28 to 29, promising an event filled with excitement and camaraderie.
Overall, this event not only showcases the athletic talents of young participants but also highlights the growing spirit of sportsmanship and community support within Fiji’s athletics scene. With continued encouragement and development, the future looks bright for athletics in the region.
