The Suva One athletics team is gearing up to defend their title in the Under 14 boys’ division at the upcoming Tuckers Ice Cream Primary Schools Athletics Championship, taking place this weekend. Head coach Bill Momo shared insights into their preparation and aspirations during an interview with SUNsports.

Momo emphasized that their training has been thorough, transitioning from general preparations to the pre-competition phase. He expressed gratitude to the stakeholders, including the heads of schools, teachers, and parents, for their support. Reflecting on the previous year’s performance, he noted the team’s intention to address any weaknesses.

In addition to focusing on the boys’ division, Momo has set a goal to secure success in the girls’ division as well. The team faced challenges due to adverse weather conditions but managed to adapt by changing training venues when necessary. He conveyed confidence in his athletes’ ability to handle intense training, highlighting their defined targets for times and distances, which were evaluated during the recent Fiji athletics meet organized by Athletics Fiji.

Momo remarked on the growth of athletics in Fiji, stating that the sport is becoming more professional. To further enhance their training, skilled coaches like Antonio Raboiliku for long jump, Tui Vanuavou for high jump, Rajen Prasad for throws, and Fesaitu Mario have been included in the coaching staff. The teachers are also benefitting from ongoing training, with opportunities for accreditation in athletics coaching available to educators in rural areas and outer islands.

While Suva One aims for victory, Momo acknowledged that other districts are equally motivated, as they seek to claim medals. He expressed appreciation for the support from guardians and sponsors, recognizing that participation is a win in itself for students, especially those competing for the first time.

Looking ahead, he anticipates strong competition from the Wallis and Futuna athletics team, which will add excitement to the event. The championship is set to take place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on November 28 and 29.

This upcoming championship is not only a platform for competition but also a celebration of athletic talent and community support, showcasing the dedication and commitment of young athletes and their mentors. As they prepare for the event, the emphasis on teamwork, growth, and development will surely foster a sense of camaraderie among participants from various districts.
