The Suva One athletics team is gearing up to defend their title in the Under 14 boys’ division at the upcoming Tuckers Ice Cream Primary Schools athletics championship, which takes place this weekend. Head coach Bill Momo expressed confidence in their preparations, stating that they are now in the pre-competition phase and are grateful for the support from stakeholders, including school heads, teachers, and parents.
Momo emphasized the importance of refining their weaknesses based on last year’s performances and mentioned a goal to secure victories in the girls’ division as well. Despite facing challenges posed by adverse weather conditions, the team has successfully adjusted their training locations to ensure consistent preparation. Momo highlighted that the athletes have responded well to their intense training regimen, with specific performance targets in mind.
Recently, the athletes showcased their abilities during the Fiji athletics meet organized by Athletics Fiji, and Momo noted significant growth in athletics in the country. He applauded the inclusion of specialist coaches in their training program, which has helped elevate the sport to a more professional level. Additionally, Momo acknowledged the efforts made by Athletics Fiji to enhance coaching accreditation for teachers, particularly in rural and outer islands.
As competition heats up, Momo recognized that other districts would pose stiff challenges, with each team aiming for victory and the coveted gold medals. The solidarity and support from parents and school heads contribute to their strength.
Moreover, Momo welcomed the participation of the Wallis and Futuna athletics team, signaling a boost in competitiveness for the championship. The event is set to be held at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on November 28 and 29, promising an exciting display of young athletic talent.
This championship not only serves as a platform for budding athletes to showcase their skills but also fosters a spirit of camaraderie and competition among the participating teams. Each competitor, including those who will be running and throwing for the first time, embodies a spirit of achievement and growth, further enhancing the significance of the event.
The forthcoming competition is a testament to the thriving athletics scene in Fiji, offering young athletes an opportunity to shine and inspiring future generations to pursue excellence in sports.
