The Suva Netball Association is enhancing its competitive format with the introduction of a Super Round to its ongoing round-robin competition. This initiative aims to mimic higher-level contests, promoting a more intense environment for teams.

Volasiga Justice, the association’s secretary, explained the reasoning behind the new format and its significance. With a staggering 108 teams participating, fitting all matches within a day was challenging, leading to the decision to focus on the elite Super grade—comprising the top eight teams from the Open Women’s knockout rounds.

The Super grade is designed to feature elite players, including those from both district and national levels. An exciting addition to the gameplay is the Super Shot format, allowing players to score two points from a designated area on the court during the last five minutes of each quarter, which aims to encourage long-range shooting among players.

“This rule is inspired by current trends seen in Australia and New Zealand,” Justice noted. He expressed hopes that the high-stakes nature of the Super Shot will attract scouts from overseas, potentially providing players with more opportunities for recognition and advancement.

Finally, the wider competition for the Suva Netball Association will continue with its eighth round this week, which promises to be competitive as teams strive to showcase their skills and secure their places in the upcoming finals.

Overall, the introduction of the Super Round and Super Shot format brings a new excitement to the matches, paving the way for greater exposure for players and promising to elevate the game’s profile within the region. The community eagerly anticipates the engaging competitions ahead.
