Suva Medics triumphed in the second edition of the Wellness Medics Inter District Championship, held at the Uprising Sports Centre in Pacific Harbour last weekend. This two-day tournament brought together enthusiastic soccer players from various sectors of the Fijian medical community, including teams from the Ministry of Health, Aspen, and private organizations.
The event flourished with excitement as Suva Medics faced Labasa Medics in a thrilling final, marking a noteworthy moment for both teams. The chief guest, Dr. Mark Rokobuli, a senior orthopaedic consultant and passionate soccer player, highlighted the tournament’s emphasis on wellness and teamwork, inspiring both participants and spectators.
Nine teams participated in total, with representation from the Northern, Western, and Central Divisions. Each team displayed remarkable dedication and sportsmanship, leading to the advancement of four teams into the knockout stages of the competition. In the semi-finals, Labasa Medics achieved a solid 3-0 victory against Max Nadroga Medics, while Suva Medics triumphed over Lautoka Aspen in a nail-biting penalty shootout, securing a 3-2 win after finishing 3-3 in regulation time.
The final match saw Suva Medics claim victory with a narrow 1-0 win, thanks to a goal by Registered Nurse Aman Asneel Prasad from CWM Hospital, marking their first championship title for 2024 after being the runner-up last year. In the third-place playoff, Lautoka Aspen defeated Max Nadroga Medics with a score of 2-1.
Individual accolades recognized the exceptional performances and sportsmanship displayed throughout the tournament. Dr. Rishwan Khan from Lautoka Aspen earned the Golden Boot for his goal-scoring prowess, while Registered Nurse Ravinesh Singh from Labasa Hospital won the Golden Glove for allowing only two goals during the event. Dr. Divneet Chand from Labasa Hospital was named Best Player for his outstanding contributions. Additionally, Dr. Rokobuli received the Most Disciplined Player award, underscoring the importance of respect in the sport.
The organizing committee, led by President Dr. Neeshil Varman, expressed gratitude towards Aspen Medical, the Ministry of Health, and the Wellness Department for their logistical support, noting that the success of the tournament was a collective effort. Looking ahead, Labasa has been designated as the host for next year’s event, with details regarding the date and tournament structure to be confirmed later.
The spirit of camaraderie and healthy competition showcased at this year’s championship bodes well for community engagement and the promotion of wellness through sports.
