Suva Medics Shine at Wellness Medics Championship!

Suva Medics secured victory in the recent Wellness Medics Inter District Championship (IDC), held at the Uprising Sports Centre in Pacific Harbour over the weekend. This exciting two-day tournament showcased the talents of soccer lovers from Fiji’s medical community, featuring teams from the Ministry of Health, Aspen, and various private sector organizations.

The event witnessed thrilling matches, ultimately culminating in a final contest where Suva Medics triumphed over Labasa Medics with a narrow 1-0 scoreline. The decisive goal was scored by Registered Nurse Aman Asneel Prasad from CWM Hospital, leading Suva Medics to their first championship title of 2024.

A total of nine teams participated, including three from the Northern Division, four from the Western Division, and two from the Central Division. The competition was fierce, with teams displaying remarkable sportsmanship and skills as they contended for the title. In the semi-finals, Labasa Medics achieved a convincing 3-0 victory against Max Nadroga Medics. Meanwhile, Suva Medics advanced after a dramatic penalty shootout against Lautoka Aspen, winning 3-2 after the teams ended regulation play tied at 3-3.

Notable individual awards were distributed at the tournament, highlighting exceptional contributions. Dr Rishwan Khan from Lautoka Aspen was honored with the Golden Boot for being the top scorer, while Registered Nurse Ravinesh Singh from Labasa Hospital earned the Golden Glove for only conceding two goals throughout the event. The Best Player award went to Dr Divneet Chand from Labasa Hospital, recognized for his outstanding play.

Dr Mark Rokobuli, a senior orthopaedic consultant and an enthusiastic soccer player, served as the chief guest. His presence emphasized the tournament’s focus on wellness and teamwork, inspiring both participants and spectators. Additionally, Dr Rokobuli was named the Most Disciplined Player of the Tournament, underscoring the importance of respect and integrity in sports.

Organizing Committee President, Dr Neeshil Varman, thanked Aspen Medical, the Ministry of Health, and the Wellness Department for their crucial support in logistics and preparation for the tournament. He also praised his committee members for their hard work in making the event a success.

Looking ahead, Labasa will be the host for next year’s IDC, with details on the date and format to be announced soon. This annual championship not only promotes competition but also fosters unity and camaraderie within the medical community, paving the way for future events filled with enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
