Suva Medics claimed victory in the second edition of the Wellness Medics Inter District Championship (IDC) held last weekend at the Uprising Sports Centre in Pacific Harbour. This two-day event brought together soccer fans from across Fiji’s medical community, featuring teams from the Ministry of Health, Aspen, and various private sector organizations.
This year’s tournament was a vibrant celebration of sportsmanship, with Suva Medics triumphing in an intense final match against Labasa Medics. Dr. Mark Rokobuli, a senior orthopedic consultant and passionate soccer player, served as the chief guest. His attendance highlighted the core values of wellness and teamwork that the tournament aims to promote, inspiring all participants.
Nine teams participated in the event, representing the Northern, Western, and Central Divisions, showcasing their commitment and competitive spirit. Four teams advanced to the knockout rounds, with Labasa Medics defeating Max Nadroga Medics 3-0 in one semi-final, while Suva Medics triumphed over Lautoka Aspen in a tension-filled penalty shootout after finishing regulation play tied at 3-3.
In the final, Suva Medics emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 win, thanks to a goal from Registered Nurse Aman Asneel Prasad of CWM Hospital. This victory marked their first championship title for 2024, after finishing as runners-up the previous year. In the match for third place, Lautoka Aspen outperformed Max Nadroga Medics, winning 2-1.
The tournament also honored individual talents and sportsmanship. Dr. Rishwan Khan from Lautoka Aspen received the Golden Boot for scoring the most goals, while Registered Nurse Ravinesh Singh from Labasa Hospital was awarded the Golden Glove for conceding only two goals throughout the competition. The Best Player title went to Dr. Divneet Chand from Labasa Hospital for his stellar performance, and Dr. Rokobuli was recognized as the Most Disciplined Player of the Tournament, emphasizing the values of respect and integrity.
Dr. Neeshil Varman, President of the Organizing Committee, expressed his gratitude to Aspen Medical, the Ministry of Health, and the Wellness Department for their support in logistics and transportation for the event. He also commended his committee members for their dedicated efforts in making the tournament a success.
Looking ahead, Labasa will host next year’s event, with details regarding the date and format to be announced later. This reflects the ongoing commitment to fostering unity and sportsmanship within Fiji’s medical community, promising an even more exciting tournament in the future.
Overall, this event not only provided an exciting platform for athletic competition but also strengthened bonds among health professionals and highlighted the importance of wellness and teamwork.
