Last weekend, Suva Medics emerged victorious in the Wellness Medics Inter District Championship (IDC), held at the Uprising Sports Centre in Pacific Harbour. This two-day event fostered camaraderie among soccer enthusiasts from the Fijian medical community, featuring teams from the Ministry of Health, Aspen, and the private sector.
The tournament showcased intense competition and sportsmanship among the nine participating teams, which included three from the Northern Division, four from the Western Division, and two from the Central Division. Four teams advanced to the knockout stages, with Labasa Medics and Suva Medics reaching the finals.
The semi-finals saw Labasa Medics decisively defeat Max Nadroga Medics 3-0, while Suva Medics, led by Registered Nurse Nitin Lal, secured their place in the final following a thrilling penalty shootout win over Lautoka Aspen, after a tie of 3-3 in regular play.
In the final match, Suva Medics, motivated by their previous runner-up finish, claimed the championship with a narrow 1-0 victory, thanks to a goal from Registered Nurse Aman Asneel Prasad of CWM Hospital. Meanwhile, Lautoka Aspen took third place with a 2-1 win against Max Nadroga Medics.
Individual players also received recognition for their performance in the tournament: Dr. Rishwan Khan from Lautoka Aspen won the Golden Boot, while Registered Nurse Ravinesh Singh from Labasa Hospital earned the Golden Glove for only conceding two goals throughout the event. The Best Player award was bestowed upon Dr. Divneet Chand of Labasa Hospital for his exceptional play, and Dr. Mark Rokobuli was recognized as the Most Disciplined Player, underscoring the values of respect and integrity on the field.
Organizing Committee President, Dr. Neeshil Varman, expressed sincere gratitude to Aspen Medical, the Ministry of Health, and the Wellness Department for their invaluable support, as well as appreciation for his committee members who worked tirelessly to ensure the event’s success. Looking ahead, Labasa has been selected to host next year’s championship, with dates and format to be announced later.
