Suva Medics has emerged victorious at the second edition of the Wellness Medics Inter District Championship, held last weekend at the Uprising Sports Centre in Pacific Harbour. This exciting two-day event united soccer enthusiasts from various sectors of the Fijian medical community, featuring teams from the Ministry of Health, Aspen, and the private sector.
The tournament showcased spirited competition, culminating in a thrilling final where Suva Medics defeated Labasa Medics with a narrow 1-0 victory. This win marks Suva Medics’ first title of 2024, following their runner-up finish in the previous year. Registered Nurse Aman Asneel Prasad of CWM Hospital scored the decisive goal, fueling the team’s determination.
Dr. Mark Rokobuli, a senior orthopaedic consultant and notable soccer player, graced the event as the chief guest, emphasizing the values of wellness and teamwork that underpin the tournament. The competition featured a total of nine teams from various divisions, demonstrating impressive dedication and sportsmanship—four teams advanced to the knockout stages.
In the semi-finals, Labasa Medics achieved a convincing 3-0 win over Max Nadroga Medics, while Suva Medics secured their place in the final by triumphing over Lautoka Aspen in a tension-filled penalty shootout, winning 3-2 after a 3-3 draw in regular time.
The tournament also honored individual excellence, awarding Dr. Rishwan Khan from Lautoka Aspen with the Golden Boot, while Registered Nurse Ravinesh Singh from Labasa Hospital received the Golden Glove for conceding only two goals throughout the event. The Best Player accolade went to Dr. Divneet Chand from Labasa Hospital, and Dr. Rokobuli was recognized as the Most Disciplined Player, reflecting the importance of respect and integrity in sports.
Organizing Committee President Dr. Neeshil Varman expressed gratitude for the support provided by Aspen Medical, the Ministry of Health, and the Wellness Department, which were instrumental in the tournament’s logistics. He also acknowledged the dedication of his committee members, contributing to another successful year.
Looking ahead, Labasa will host next year’s championship, with details regarding the tournament’s date and format to be announced later.
