Residents of Suva are encouraged to participate in a new initiative called Return and Earn, which aims to tackle plastic pollution in the city. Under this program, individuals can turn in their plastic bottles and cans in exchange for 5 cents per item. This effort is a part of Suva’s broader strategy to promote recycling and environmental responsibility.

The collection takes place daily from 9 AM to 1 PM at the Suva City Council’s Health Compost Facility located on Fulaga Street, Samabula. Additionally, there are collection points every Thursday at Eagles Court, Raiwai, during the same hours.

Tevita Boseiwaqa, the council chairman, emphasized the program’s significance by stating that it reflects the council’s commitment to public health and marine conservation. He noted, “This initiative is part of a broader effort to tackle plastic waste in our city and foster sustainable habits among residents.”

The Return and Earn initiative aligns with similar programs already in place in other Fijian towns like Sigatoka, Lautoka, Lami, Nausori, and Nadi, indicating a nationwide movement towards cleaner environments and a stronger emphasis on sustainability.

The council is urging community members to take part in this vital program, highlighting that even small actions can lead to substantial changes in reducing plastic waste and protecting Fiji’s natural environment. This initiative not only promotes recycling but also aims to cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility among all residents.
