Suva Hibiscus Carnival Breaks Records and Hearts in 1992

The 1992 Air New Zealand Suva Hibiscus Carnival set a new benchmark by raising an astounding $187,006.13. This remarkable achievement was reported by The Fiji Times on August 24 of that year.

The event saw the crowning of Setaitata Tamanikaiyaroi, representing the National Bank of Fiji, as Miss Charity after she raised an impressive $53,313. Thousands flocked to the streets of Suva to witness the carnival, which featured a lively float parade on Saturday afternoon, all under sunny skies amid warm temperatures.

The highlight of the festival took place on Saturday night at Albert Park, where a traditional crowning ceremony was held. This year’s event differed significantly from the previous year, which had faced rainy weather, with large crowds gathering to celebrate. Contestants showcased their elegance in full-length evening gowns, featuring colors such as emerald green, purple, black, mauve, and peach.

A standout moment occurred when the Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, crowned the 21-year-old science student Elisapeci Kubuabola as Miss Hibiscus 1992. The young winner, who studies at Otago University in New Zealand, expressed her surprise and gratitude toward her sponsors, family, and fellow participants.

The first runner-up was Salote Kaimacuata, a 31-year-old lawyer representing the Fiji National Provident Fund, while the second runner-up, Sanya Gain, a 22-year-old customer benefits officer, represented Colonial Mutual Life. Both finalists were praised for their grace and charm throughout the competition.

In addition to Tamanikaiyaroi’s crowning as Miss Charity, Yvonne Joseph, representing Bank of Baroda, also earned recognition for raising a significant charitable contribution. Following the ceremony, Kubuabola, in a stunning black velvet gown with white puffy sleeves, interacted with the crowd.

The carnival also had exciting travel rewards, as Miss Hibiscus received a trip to Los Angeles, while Miss Charity was awarded a trip to Honolulu, along with spending money. The first runner-up was also granted return tickets to Auckland as part of the charity initiatives.

Lord Mayor of Suva, Seni Buadromo, encouraged everyone to carry forward the spirit of togetherness fostered during the carnival until the next year’s event. The night ended with an escort for the winners and contestants by soldiers from the Fiji Military Force, celebrating a week filled with community spirit and camaraderie.
