The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has officially confirmed that it carried out a joint inspection in Suva Harbour yesterday morning, following reports of a fuel slick spotted near the beacon opposite the China Club.
In a statement, the Ministry explained that their inspectors collaborated with officers from Fiji Ports Limited to conduct both an on-site boat inspection and drone surveillance. This was to evaluate the extent of the reported pollution and to assist in identifying its potential source.
Interestingly, the Ministry observed that the fuel slick began to disperse with the incoming tide, a natural occurrence in such situations. Despite this, investigations are ongoing, and the area will remain under close watch for any additional signs of pollution.
In light of this incident, the Ministry has emphasized the importance of exercising heightened care by all businesses and vessel operators when managing fuel, oil, and other hazardous substances. Ensuring proper handling practices is crucial to prevent any pollution in waterways and the marine environment, highlighting the ongoing commitment to environmental protection.
This proactive approach not only addresses immediate concerns but also fosters a culture of responsibility and vigilance within the community, potentially leading to a healthier marine ecosystem.
