The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has made significant strides in improving the environmental conditions at Suva harbour, successfully removing eight derelict vessels as of December 2023. Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau announced this achievement, emphasizing that it is part of a broader initiative led by the Marine Environment Joint Committee, formed to expedite the removal of abandoned ships from the area.

Initially, there were 44 derelict vessels in the harbour, but through the committee’s diligent efforts, this number has now reduced to 30. The removal process involved not only the destruction of the eight vessels but also included the resale of four vessels and the scrapping of two others. These actions were undertaken at bonus costs, demonstrating the commitment to tackle this pressing issue efficiently.

This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to combat the environmental challenges posed by derelict ships, which have emerged as a significant concern highlighted in previous discussions. The creation of removal committees and the enforcement of the Seaport Management and Maritime Transport Act serve to streamline and enhance the vessel clearance processes. The government’s holistic approach reflects a commitment to both maritime safety and ecological preservation.

Furthermore, involving local businesses in the scrapping process not only aids in the removal of these vessels but also bolsters the Fijian economy. Collaboration in this endeavor underscores the importance of community support in achieving environmental objectives.

As efforts continue, the aim is to ensure a cleaner and more navigable Suva harbour. The government’s proactive measures reveal a dedication to sustaining the health of Fiji’s marine ecosystems, which are vital for the tourism and local fishing industries. This endeavor holds promise for setting a strong precedent for responsible environmental stewardship in the region, fostering a vibrant and sustainable maritime environment for the future.
