Suva FC showcased an impressive comeback in the Digicel Super Women’s League, battling back from a 3-0 deficit to secure a 3-3 draw against Tailevu Naitasiri at the Fiji FA grounds in Vatuwaqa yesterday. The first half saw Tailevu Naitasiri dominate, with goals from Timaima Ana, Ana Naivukivuki, and Katarina Nailele giving them a commanding lead.
However, the energy shifted in the second half as Suva FC responded vigorously. Penelope Pickering and Alisi Qereqeretabua both scored, leveling the match, much to the delight of their supporters.
Despite the tie, Tailevu Naitasiri head coach Elvis Goundar expressed disappointment regarding some referee decisions and acknowledged the need for improvements in their defense. Goundar reflected on the match stating, “The girls have played well, but it was not a luck for us, the game was good we were leading 3-0 at half-time, but unfortunately it all came to a draw.” He emphasized that defensive strategies will be a focus in their upcoming matches.
Recognizing the commitment of both his players and their families, Goundar thanked the parents for allowing their daughters to play, especially during exam week, and commended the girls for their dedication to the team.
This game highlights the resilience and fighting spirit of the Suva FC team, demonstrating that persistence and teamwork can lead to impressive recoveries, even when facing significant challenges. The respect shown by Goundar for the opposing team also reflects a commendable sportsmanship that adds to the league’s competitive spirit.
The match serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of sports and the importance of both skill and determination. It’s a testament that in football, the game isn’t over until the final whistle blows, promising exciting encounters in future matches.
