Suva launched their 2024 Skipper Cup season in impressive style, defeating Vinod Patel Ba with a score of 35-13 at the newly renovated Four R Stadium, previously known as Govind Park. This match was particularly special for Ba’s supporters, marking their return to the historic venue after almost nine years.
The stadium was filled to capacity as fans eagerly awaited this matchup between two of Fiji’s rugby powerhouses. From the outset, Suva showcased their dominance, with winger Onisimo Nawalu scoring a try within just two minutes of the kickoff, although the conversion kick failed. Fly-half Everoni Korobiau later increased Suva’s lead by successfully converting a try from Sevuloni Lotu in the 12th minute.
Ba managed to respond with a penalty from scrumhalf William Ryland in the 14th minute, but Suva quickly answered with another penalty from Korobiau. Despite possessing several scoring opportunities, Ba struggled to find the back of the net before halftime, which ended with Suva leading 15-6.
In the second half, Suva maintained their increasing momentum, with lock Nadidi Tagiselala scoring shortly after the restart. The visitors continued to pull ahead with another penalty from Korobiau. Ba’s hopes of a comeback rose temporarily when No.8 Paula Ralulu crossed the try line in the 61st minute, successfully converting by Ryland.
However, Suva’s physical prowess proved to be overwhelming, culminating in Isikeli Lumelume scoring Suva’s fourth try in the 66th minute, which Korobiau converted. Lutu capped off the match with a fifth try, ending the contest at 35-13.
Suva’s coach Solomoni Nute expressed satisfaction with his team’s preparation and performance, highlighting their readiness and the importance of hard work moving forward. He noted the significant turnout from the local Ba community and emphasized the need for improvement in continuity as they prepare to face Lautoka in their next match.
