The Suva Magistrate’s Court has rejected the request from Blue Gas director Thakor Punja to travel to Australia for essential disc replacement surgery, determining that the procedure is neither essential nor necessary at this time. Mr. Punja argued that he is experiencing ongoing pain and presented a recommendation from Pacific Specialist Healthcare to support his request.
However, the State opposed his application, with CWM Hospital Superintendent Dr. Luke Nasedra providing testimony that Mr. Punja’s condition is not life-threatening and is manageable within Fiji. Magistrate Yogesh Prasad sided with the State, stating that there was no immediate medical emergency warranting the travel.
In his ruling, Magistrate Prasad stated, “I find the application for bail variation to travel as not essential, not necessary, pressing.” As a result, the case has been adjourned to March 10, during which further discussions and evaluations may occur regarding Mr. Punja’s health and treatment options. This decision underscores the court’s focus on ensuring that medical procedures that can occur locally are prioritized, potentially alleviating the burden on healthcare systems abroad.
