The Suva City Council (SCC) has noted a rise in the number of taxpayers who are taking the initiative to settle their rate arrears or arrange payment plans. Acting CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa expressed his appreciation for the community’s positive response to the council’s repeated appeals for payment.
While many taxpayers are beginning to address their outstanding rates, Mr. Boseiwaqa acknowledged that the overall response has not yet reached a level that would significantly alleviate the council’s total pending arrears. He reported that in the past week, there has been a noticeable increase in ratepayers visiting the office to discuss their situations and options.
Mr. Boseiwaqa highlighted the importance of fostering collaboration between the council and taxpayers, stressing that the council is prioritizing open dialogue and flexible payment arrangements. This approach aims to assist property owners in fulfilling their obligations while avoiding the need for more severe actions like court proceedings or property foreclosures.
With roughly 11,000 ratepayers associated with the council, Mr. Boseiwaqa indicated that around 4,000 to 5,000 are currently in arrears. He pointed out that consistent payments, both for current and outstanding rates, are crucial for the council to sustain its essential services.
He acknowledged that some ratepayers face genuine challenges, such as inheriting properties with existing debts or experiencing financial difficulties due to unexpected early retirement. Many had initially planned to retire at 60, but circumstances have forced them to make adjustments, leading to financial strain.
Despite these obstacles, Mr. Boseiwaqa emphasized the SCC’s dedication to working collaboratively with ratepayers to identify feasible solutions. The council’s goal is to ensure that payments—whether made in full or through installments—are made, benefiting both the council and the ratepayers.
This proactive approach reflects a commitment to community engagement and financial responsibility, which is vital for the stability of local governance and the provision of public services.
In summary, the Suva City Council’s efforts to engage with taxpayers and facilitate payment solutions underline the importance of community cooperation in overcoming financial challenges. This collaboration not only helps the council maintain essential services but also offers taxpayers a pathway to manage their financial obligations effectively. With a focus on understanding and flexibility, both the council and the community can work towards a more sustainable financial future.
