The Suva Combine Masters clinched the championship title at the Battle of the Giants (Tournament Under 45s), following a narrow 1-0 victory against the Nasinu Legends at the Uprising Sports Centre in Pacific Harbour last weekend. This victory mirrored their earlier success in the Fiji FACT veterans final, where they previously defeated the same rivals by the same scoreline.
Team captain Jan Sherani revealed that after their win at the Fiji FACT, criticism arose questioning the legitimacy of their success. Undeterred by the negativity, the Suva players committed themselves to hard work and demonstrated their tenacity by securing the BOG title. Sherani attributed their triumph to their exceptional fitness levels and outstanding teamwork, both of which have been honed through dedicated training sessions over time.
A distinct characteristic of this Suva team is its composition, focusing primarily on players who are based in Suva and have typically competed at the youth level, rather than including numerous former district representatives like other teams. This strategy has fostered a strong sense of unity and performance on the pitch.
This win exemplifies resilience in the face of criticism and showcases the power of teamwork and consistent effort. As Suva continues to build on this momentum, they pave the way for future successes in the competitive soccer scene in Fiji.
The achievements of the Suva Combine Masters should inspire hope for the future of local sports, reminding us that with determination and commitment, underdogs can rise to secure victory against more established rivals.
