The Suva City Council has approved a five percent salary increase for all its staff members, a decision made following discussions with council members, the special administrator, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa.

Tevita Boseiwaqa, the special administrator chairperson and acting chief executive officer of the council, recognized the hard work of municipal employees in maintaining cleanliness in Suva city. He stated that this pay raise is a means of acknowledging their dedication and commitment to their roles.

In his comments, Mr. Boseiwaqa emphasized that comprehensive consultations were held with staff, heads of departments, and the union before implementing this significant decision. The salary increase will benefit both established and unestablished staff and is part of a broader support initiative from the council, which includes several other employee benefits.

One early initiative was the introduction of a sick leave benefit, which was implemented just before Christmas. The first portion of the salary increase, amounting to two percent, was distributed on December 31, while an additional one percent is set to be paid out on January 28, and the remaining two percent before April 17.

Boseiwaqa praised municipal workers for their sacrifices, often spending long hours away from home, and asserted that the salary increase aims to help these employees balance their work and family lives more effectively.

Additionally, as of December 31, 2024, the council has regularized all acting positions held by employees for over six months. This decision is part of the council’s commitment to creating a healthier work environment and effective leadership. All positions below the CEO level will transition from contract to tenure roles, with regular assessments to ensure accountability and progress.

This move by the Suva City Council not only enhances employee welfare but also signifies a recognition of public service employees’ crucial contributions, laying a foundation for a motivated and committed workforce.

Overall, this initiative reflects a positive step towards the well-being of municipal workers and the sustainable development of Suva as a thriving city. It showcases the importance of acknowledging employee contributions, which can lead to improved job satisfaction and a stronger community.
