The acting CEO of Suva City Council, Tevita Boseiwaqa, has recognized the need for the installation of additional garbage bins throughout the city. Following a thorough inventory, the council has placed orders for more bins, which will be strategically positioned based on their findings. Mr. Boseiwaqa highlighted that while there have been efforts to place bins in areas notorious for littering, challenges persist as some individuals choose to disregard them, leading to further issues like vandalism and improperly disposed rubbish.

In response to these ongoing littering challenges, Mr. Boseiwaqa emphasized the importance of community collaboration in maintaining a clean environment, stating, “Institutions alone cannot address this problem; we need the support of the communities.” He noted a positive development with the Ministry of Environment joining forces to tackle these pressing issues.

In addition, he mentioned that a review of the Litter Act is necessary to potentially amend penalties associated with littering. Mr. Boseiwaqa acknowledged that littering is a widespread issue, not only in Suva but globally. He also shared updates on the city’s waste management processes, revealing that the council has improved operational strategies to address litter more effectively. With the current task and shift system in place, the team can work without the rush that previously led to mechanical issues with collection trucks.

The council is optimistic that with upcoming resources, including a new garbage truck set to arrive soon, these efforts will enhance their waste management services significantly.

This initiative reflects a proactive approach by the Suva City Council and highlights the importance of community engagement in creating a cleaner and more pleasant urban environment. The collaboration with the Ministry of Environment also showcases a commitment to sustainable practices and public health.
