The acting CEO of the Suva City Council, Tevita Boseiwaqa, has announced plans to expedite the renovation of the city’s bus stand and market area, aiming for completion by December. This initiative is part of the broader “bridge to bridge” project, which has been budgeted by the council.
Boseiwaqa acknowledged that the road conditions near the west bus stand have deteriorated and expressed the importance of this project. The comprehensive “bridge to bridge” plan, which focuses on integrated urban development, spans from the Walu Bay bridge to the Nabukalou bridge and includes improvements to both the bus stand and market facilities.
In response to this endeavor, local businesses have been approached for collaboration. The Carpenters Group has already taken steps to enhance the area by erecting a fence to improve its appearance, and other property owners are encouraged to follow suit by cleaning or painting their premises.
The council plans to prioritize the upgrades of the bus stand and market, including repainting and engaging local community groups, particularly youth, to assist with beautification efforts. Youth groups registered under the Ministry of Youth will help with the project, receiving allowances for their labor and tools.
Additionally, discussions are in progress with the Fiji Roads Authority to identify a contractor for the works, scheduled under the current fiscal budget for completion by July 2025. The initial phase of the project is estimated to cost over $100,000 and should ideally be completed by February next year, barring any delays.
This ambitious project demonstrates the Suva City Council’s commitment to improving urban infrastructure and engaging the local community in revitalization efforts. It highlights a hopeful vision for a cleaner and more attractive Suva, fostering community involvement and economic development.
