Suva City Council Unveils Bold Waste Management Revamp

The Suva City Council (SCC) is planning to improve its waste management strategies by incorporating waste sorting into its solid waste master plan. This announcement was made by SCC chair Tevita Boseiwaqa, who emphasized the council’s commitment to sustainability and waste reduction.

Mr. Boseiwaqa mentioned that the council is looking to reactivate and implement the existing solid waste master plan, which includes various waste minimization and sustainable practices. A significant focus will be on raising awareness and educating students in schools about these initiatives.

The goal of these sustainable practices is to decrease the amount of waste sent to landfills. Additionally, the council intends to set up recycling centers where residents can drop off recyclable materials. Mr. Boseiwaqa stated that they are collaborating with well-known recycling companies to establish these centers, which had been operational before but were disrupted by the pandemic. Efforts are now underway to revive them.

Furthermore, the council has started collecting vegetable waste from markets, currently processing about one ton for composting at a facility in Samabula. The primary objective of this effort is to minimize the volume of waste heading to landfills.

While acknowledging that these initiatives will take time to implement, Mr. Boseiwaqa is optimistic that the introduction of sustainable waste management practices will ultimately benefit the community.
