The Suva City Council (SCC) is set to implement a major upgrade of its data systems. SCC chairman Tevita Boseiwaqa revealed that plans for the new system are already underway, with implementation anticipated in the next three weeks.
“Our current systems are over 12 years old, established back in 2012,” Mr. Boseiwaqa stated. “The new system will incorporate numerous features, including enhanced security measures, and it will be equipped to manage issues we are currently facing, such as cyber attacks.”
He further noted that the outdated systems prevented the installation of modern antivirus software due to their age.
In addition to the system upgrade, the council has launched a five-year digital transformation strategy aimed at modernizing its infrastructure. This initiative will include updating hardware, as many devices are still functioning on outdated platforms like Windows 7.
Mr. Boseiwaqa emphasized that the council’s digitalization efforts align with its aspiration to become a smart city. An annual budget has been approved to support this initiative over the next five years.
Recently, the SCC engaged with a team from the United Nations to explore smart city concepts. Mr. Boseiwaqa remarked that the cyber attack posed significant lessons for the council and other organizations facing similar risks.
“We are open to improvement and are taking proactive measures to bolster our cybersecurity and overall digital capabilities.”
