The Suva City Council (SCC) has reported a notable rise in taxpayers making efforts to settle their rate arrears or establish payment plans. Acting CEO Tevita Boseiwaqa expressed appreciation for the community’s proactive response to the council’s ongoing appeals for payment.
While the increase in participation is encouraging, Mr. Boseiwaqa acknowledged that the overall response still does not meet the necessary level to substantially decrease the council’s remaining arrears. He indicated that many ratepayers have been visiting the office to address their accounts, and stressed the importance of open communication and flexible payment options to assist property owners in meeting their financial obligations without resorting to legal actions, such as court proceedings or property mortgages.
Mr. Boseiwaqa noted that the council is currently managing around 11,000 ratepayers, with an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 of them in arrears. He highlighted that consistent payments, both for current charges and for past dues, are crucial for maintaining essential services provided by the council. He recognized that some ratepayers may experience genuine financial hardships, including inheriting properties with existing debts or facing challenges due to unexpected early retirement, which can disrupt financial planning.
Despite these hurdles, Mr. Boseiwaqa emphasized the SCC’s dedication to collaborating with taxpayers to identify practical solutions. He reiterated that the goal is to facilitate payments, including installment options, to ensure mutual benefits for both the council and the community.
In summary, the SCC is making strides in addressing rate arrears through community engagement and support, and is committed to working alongside ratepayers to find cooperative solutions. This positive response from the community reflects a willingness to contribute to the city’s financial health and the continued delivery of essential services, demonstrating a hopeful outlook for future collaboration.
The council’s approach not only helps alleviate immediate financial pressures for ratepayers but also reinforces the importance of community solidarity in overcoming economic challenges.
