The Suva City Council has made a significant move by approving a five percent salary increase for all its staff members. This decision resulted from discussions involving council members, the special administrator, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa.

Tevita Boseiwaqa, the special administrator chairperson and acting chief executive officer, highlighted the hard work of municipal employees in maintaining the cleanliness of Suva city. He emphasized the importance of recognizing their efforts, stating, “They are the ones that got the job done.”

The pay increase will be distributed across the board for both established and unestablished staff. Boseiwaqa mentioned that thorough consultations took place with unions and departmental heads before finalizing this decision. In addition to the salary increase, the council has provided benefits such as sick leave, which was implemented before Christmas.

The salary increase will be rolled out in stages, with the first two percent paid out on December 31, 2024, and the subsequent one percent scheduled for January 28. The final two percent is expected to be disbursed before April 17. Boseiwaqa acknowledged the hard work of municipal workers, many of whom spend long hours away from their families, and noted that the pay increase aims to help them balance their professional and personal lives.

Furthermore, as of December 31, 2024, the council has regularized all acting positions held for over six months, transitioning employees below the CEO level to tenureship instead of contracted positions. An assessment process will also be implemented to monitor their performance.

This positive development not only rewards the hard work of city employees but also aims to create a more stable and sustainable work environment within the Suva City Council.

In summary, the Suva City Council is taking commendable steps to support its employees, which bodes well for the future of municipal services and the wellbeing of its workforce.
