The Suva City Council (SCC) has announced a five percent salary increase for all employees, marking a step toward enhancing the compensation of municipal workers. This decision followed consultations involving council members, the special administrator, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa.
Tevita Boseiwaqa, the SCC’s special administrator and acting CEO, praised the efforts of staff who work diligently to maintain the cleanliness of Suva city, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging their hard work. He stated, “A thorough consultation was carried out with everyone, especially the union and staff and heads of departments, before we took this bold step.”
The five percent pay increase will be distributed in stages, with a two percent payout occurring on December 31, 2024, and the remaining increments of one percent scheduled for January 28 and another two percent before April 17. In addition to salary adjustments, the SCC had already implemented a sick leave benefit prior to Christmas.
Boseiwaqa recognized the sacrifices made by municipal workers who often spend extended hours away from their homes. The pay increase is viewed as a way to support employees in balancing their work and family commitments.
Furthermore, the SCC has made strides to regularize all acting positions held within the council as of the end of 2024, particularly for those who have been in a position for over six months. The initiative aims to create a stable and healthy work environment. Positions below the CEO level will transition from contract roles to tenured positions, with ongoing assessments to track progress.
This positive development reflects the SCC’s commitment to improving the welfare of its employees and fostering a supportive workplace environment, ultimately contributing to the betterment of the Suva community.
