The Suva City Council has announced a five percent salary increase for all its employees following consultations with the council, the special administrator, and the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa. Tevita Boseiwaqa, the SCC special administrator and acting chief executive officer, recognized the hard work of municipal employees in maintaining the cleanliness of Suva and emphasized the value they bring to the city.
Boseiwaqa stated that the pay increase reflects the council’s commitment to acknowledging the efforts of its workforce. He mentioned that the increase will benefit both established and unestablished staff and is part of a broader initiative that includes a range of employee benefits. Earlier, the SCC had introduced a sick leave benefit, particularly before the Christmas holiday.
The salary increment will be phased in, with a two percent payout already completed on December 31, 2024, and subsequent payments of one percent scheduled for January 28, with the final two percent to be distributed before April 17. This initiative is seen as a step towards supporting workers, especially those who often spend significant time away from their families.
In addition to the salary increase, the SCC has moved to regularize all acting positions within the council as of the end of 2024, particularly for those who have held these roles for over six months. This decision aims to create a stable work environment and promote effective leadership within the council, moving away from contracted positions to a system of tenureship.
This positive development is a reflection of the SCC’s efforts to foster a supportive work culture, ensuring that municipal workers feel valued and recognized for their contributions. It is hopeful that such measures will not only boost morale but also enhance productivity among staff as they balance their professional and personal lives.
Overall, the council’s steps towards improving employee benefits signify a commitment to nurturing a motivated workforce dedicated to serving the community.
