The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) is set to hold its biannual forum this week at the Vale ni Bose in Suva, gathering traditional leaders from across the nation’s 14 provinces and Rotuma. The two-day event, taking place today and tomorrow, will emphasize a range of topics, including updates from the Council’s various sub-committees that focus on critical areas such as education and cultural revitalization, community resilience, and stakeholder engagement.
Chairperson of the GCC, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, has previously stressed the importance of fostering stronger partnerships among chiefs, church leaders, and other community stakeholders to effectively tackle pressing social issues, notably the rising concerns surrounding illicit drug use in communities. The forum will serve as an essential platform for these discussions, which are crucial in promoting community welfare and support.
Additionally, the agenda will include strategies aimed at improving educational outcomes for the iTaukei population, as well as methods to enhance the role of traditional leadership within contemporary governance structures. This gathering presents an opportunity for chiefs to collaborate towards building a resilient and united future, reflecting a commitment to both heritage and progressive governance.
